The trigger job was performed exceptionally well. There is zero creep and overtravel and the armorers lowered the pull from the out-of-the-box 7 pounds, to a more loving 4 pounds. Creep is simply the amount of movement the trigger has to travel before it starts to catch the seer to release the firing pin. The overtravel is how far the trigger travels after the weapon has been fired. Having the 4 pounds of resistance on the trigger makes this gun a much more accurate instrument. Why? With a heavier trigger, your hands have a tendency to either tremble, the trigger finger pushes the gun away from the firing hand, or both. Even slight trembling can throw a bullet off trajectory.
The Trijicon night sites are simply awesome! They are incredibly bright when the sun goes down, and should keep that brightness for years to come. The sight picture is clean and easily acquired, and the eye will almost immediately focus on the front post. During the day, they stand out as familiar white three-dot combination. If you’re into competition, Trijicon offers an incentive. Sign up on their website, wear their merchandise and use their optics, and they will give you discounts on merchandise depending on how well you do in a given IPSC/USPSA matches. See their website for details. Trijicon even gives you the T-shirt, hat, and patches. They are also highly supportive of our troops so any time we do business with these kinds of organizations, I say, is a good investment.
One complaint about the work. When I received my pistol back I was really excited to test it out. So I grabbed a box of ammunition and headed to the range. I noticed right away that I was shooting about 2” left. For a long time I figured it was shooter induced until I noticed something while cleaning. The front sight wasn’t sitting down the center of the bore. In fact, it was slightly sitting to the right causing my errant rounds. A tap with a punch pushed the sight back into alignment, and the XD shoots accurately again.
Finally, there are few parts you can buy to replace on the XD. For many repairs, you have to send it back to the factory, wait your turn in line for the repair to be complete, then they mail it back to you. Some of the send-to-factory requirements seem arbitrary. For example, replacing the locking block requires the removal of two pins and the take down lever. Factory replacement is required. However, to replace the spring in the grip safety, just call customer service and they’ll mail one out to you. That part requires the removal of the seer, ejector, striker safety lever, grip safety lever, and two springs. Putting those parts back together is a little tricky, but can be done. The point is, Springfield really needs to distribute parts and perhaps certify local gunsmiths the way Glock does. Until they do that, they probably won’t overtake Glock in the open market.
Still, the quality of the gun is top notch. Fabulous job Springfield!
