Clothes Pin Exercise

Clothes pins aren’t just for hanging clothes! They make great tools to practice trigger control! What do I mean? It’s a quite simple exercise really.

First, take a clothes pin and place the legs between the tip of your thumb and the pad of your trigger finger. Second, slowly squeeze with your trigger finger, pivoting at that middle knuckle. Make it a smooth squeeze and be sure not to move your thumb. You’re trying to isolate the movement to a simple stoke of that trigger finger.

Why can’t you move any other part of your hand? That too is pretty simple. Any movement on a pistol, no matter how slight, will cause the bullet to move off of your original—and intended—point of aim. If the vectoring is too great you may miss your target completely. A target 3 yards away will probably suffer very little. Once you move that target out to the 25+ yard mark, the isolation of the trigger finger becomes even more important.

The nice thing about this exercise is you can do it anywhere. How many hours are wasted sitting in front of the television? On the same account, how many hours are “wasted” in business meetings, standing in line, or sitting in traffic? Keep a clothes pin in your pocket and start squeezing. The improvement that you see when you head to the range isn’t going to be drastic, but as you start adding up all of the “little” things you’ll begin to see bigtime results!
